Reading

Reading is so important for all of our children. Within our book bands we use a range of books and reading schemes to allow children to become familiar with a variety of texts and to encourage a love of reading. Some of the main schemes are Oxford Reading Tree and Collins.

All children currently have access to the Collins Connect Library

In Reception the children are initially introduced to picture books. We encourage them to develop story telling and basic comprehensions skills using the images in the books.

As children move through the Foundation Stage, KS1 and KS2 they will progress through our reading scheme and may eventually become free readers. We support the children to not just decode the words on the page but also to discuss the books. Reading Comprehension is so important. It is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. We aim for children to be able to accurately understand written material and make connections between what they read and what they already know. This includes thinking deeply about what they have read.

Please look below for some advice on supporting your child with reading. On each class page there is also a year group specific book list.
