Maths

We are now going to be using the new Power Maths books for our maths sessions (Year 4 Practice Book Summer Home Edition), which you should all now have. For each ‘lesson’ I have made a short video to go with it. You may not always need the video, but they are there for extra support should you require it. Some weeks the videos will be in more depth depending on the lesson focus.  The books are designed to start with a ‘discover’ activity which you should look at without any help. In the video I explain that you should pause the video and have a think about what the ‘discover’ page is asking you to do. Then you can continue the video, and I will talk you through the ‘share’ page which helps you unpick the question. The idea is that this helps remind you how to do the tasks and you can then move on to the next two pages in the section and work fairly independently. The answers are in the back of the book so you can mark your work and see how you got on. There will be 3 of these ‘lessons’ each week and you should spread them out across the week. I have also included an optional challenge linked to the week’s learning which you can try. This will follow the same layout as the challenges we’ve used so far and the answers will be provided. These are completely optional, so please do not worry if you don’t have time in the week.

Lesson 1: Multiplying a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number (pages 4-7)

Video lesson: https://youtu.be/3h5Ks_TOncY

Lesson 2: Multiplying a 3-digit number by a 1-digit number (pages 8-11)

Video lesson: https://youtu.be/xwcAKUhfj0Q

Lesson 3: Dividing a 2-digit number by a 1-digit number (pages 12-15)
Video lesson: https://youtu.be/C6NOuKwL5_k

Optional challenge activity- Multiply 3-digits by 1-digit

There are two challenges to try if you’d like to. The answers are provided.

Literacy

Task 1: Spellings
Practise your weekly spellings and use the PowerPoint to help you. Can you make a wordsearch or a crossword to help you practise your spellings?

Task 2: SPaG- Nouns, adjectives and verbs

Use your current reading book (or choose your favourite book) and open it up on a random page. It’s best to use a fiction book for this activity. On the table provided, list all the nouns, adjectives and verbs you can find.  Then repeat the activity with another page. Do this 5 times until your table is filled with words! Choose 5 adjectives, 5 verbs and 5 nouns from the table and write your own sentences. I have included 5 random pages from ‘The Girl Who Stole An Elephant’ in case you want to use those J

Task 3: Reading Comprehension

Complete the reading comprehension activity on Treasure House.

So you have a bit of time to ease back into Home Learning, there will be no creative writing task this week.

Other tasks

Science- Environments

Choose one environment to look at: Arctic, desert, ocean, rainforest, urban or woodland.

Find out about some of the animals that live in your chosen environment. How are they adapted to live and survive in their environment? Are there any common characteristics between the animals?

Create an information fact file (like a page you might find in an information book) presenting your facts. Include pictures/drawings please! I have included a fact file template that you can use if you would like. It’s a Word document so it can be edited/adapted.

Topic- Evacuation

This week we are going to focus on evacuation during the Second World War. Go through the PowerPoint to learn about evacuation and what it was like to be an evacuee.

Task 1: Empty suitcase activities

Imagine you are a child during WW2 who is being evacuated to the countryside. You have to pack a suitcase to take with you. Choose four items from the list to take with you and explain why you’ve chosen each one. Then you can draw everything you’d need to pack if you were an evacuee in the empty suitcase. Do some research to find out the sorts of things boys and girls would be allowed to take with them. Can you label your drawing?

Next week we are going to be writing letters as if we were an evacuee so you can start thinking/planning what you might include in your letter. More details to come!

D&T- Making a fruit salad

This week I’d like you to have a go at designing, making and evaluating a fruit salad. Use the Fruit Salad sheet to help you.

Scavenger hunt

I thought this week I’d set you a fun task that everyone in your house can get involved in! I’ve created a scavenger hunt with 20 items for you to find around your house. See how many of them you can find! When you’ve found the item, either write the name of it in the box, draw a picture of it in the box or stick a photo of it in the box. Brothers and sisters (and adults!) are welcome to have a go at this too! Send over your finished scavenger hunt sheets once you’ve completed it. I hope you enjoy this activity!

Reading with Miss Steyn

Our new book for this term is going to be Friend or Foe by Michael Morpurgo. This story links brilliantly to our WW2 topic!

Purple Mash

There will be some activities for you to complete on Purple Mash. Log in and go to ‘2Dos’ and complete the tasks that have been set. I will be able to see how you got on once you’ve finished.

Physical Activity
Try this dance routine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KhfkYzUwYFk

Make sure you try and get outside for a little bit each day. Go on a morning/afternoon walk or do some exercises in your garden. Fresh air is really important!

Don’t forget to spend some time every day reading and practising your times tables. You can complete the Daily 10 everyday too https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

If you’d like to continue keeping up to date with the news, watch the daily and weekly news on Espresso (weekly news updated every Thursday). Newsround is also another good one to look at https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround

Text Box: Miss Steyn’s Brainteaser of the week:

I am an odd number. Take away a letter and I become even. What number am I?

If you think you know, email me the answer!

Have another great week of home learning everyone.

Speak to you soon,

Miss Steyn J
