This week we are going to be introduced to classification keys. We are going to look at identifying vertebrates by observing their similarities and differences. You will have a go at using questions to sort animals in a key and then think about generating some of your own questions about animals. Go through the classifying vertebrates PowerPoint and watch the video.

Task 1: Sort the animal pictures into the correct group (mammal, amphibian, reptile, fish, bird or insect)

Task 2: Complete the vertebrates sheet where you need to look at the questions asked to sort the animals in the key.

Task 3: Have a go at making up your own questions to complete the classification key.

This week you are going to be learning all about the Battle of Britain. Go through the PowerPoint to learn all about the events of the Battle of Britain and to learn about dog fights and aerial warfare.

Task 1: Complete the key facts sheet and cut out the cards to make your own timeline. Again, you can present this in a different way if you’d like.

Task 2: Imagine you have witnessed an aerial battle in the Battle of Britain and you have been asked to share the details of what you saw. Write a descriptive recount of the battle you saw. Try and include some important historical facts. Since we have been learning about fronted adverbials, I’d like to see some of these included in your writing.

Here is an example:

As quick as a flash, I could see a group of Messerschmitts zooming towards a British Spitfire. For a few moments, my heart stopped beating. Out of nowhere, the sound of deafening gun fire filled the sky. The Nazi plane had shot at the Spitfire. My heart was pounding as I looked up and saw another Spitfire advancing. Swerving around the left-hand side of the Messerschmitt, this second Spitfire came to the rescue. It was following the German plane. Suddenly, it blasted it with a round of fire. The Messerschmitt cartwheeled and propelled through the air. In a burst of flames, the plane zigzagged down and landed on the ground with a crash.

Art

I have given you some pictures of Spitfires. Have a go at drawing/sketching your own Spitfire and colouring it in. You could use tracing paper to trace over the picture and then colour it in.

Optional DT task
Can you make a model spitfire?
