Owl Class Home Learning Week Beginning 4.5.20-8.5.20

I hope you are all doing well and are finding time in your day to carry on with your learning. You are doing really well so far! Are you enjoying it? A quick reminder to send me over your report comments if you haven’t already. Don’t forget to send me any pictures/videos of war ‘bits and bobs’ that you would normally have brought in to share with the class. Depending on how much I receive, I will make a weekly PowerPoint to share with the class so that everyone gets to see! Please enjoy the first PowerPoint and thank you to those children who have sent things in.

Maths

Task 1: Complete The number line to 10,000 (1) in the Power Maths workbook (pages 24-26)

Task 2: Complete The number line to 10,000 (2) in the Power Maths workbook (pages 27-29)

Task 3: Complete Roman numerals to 100 in the Power Maths workbook (pages 30-32)

If you’d like, you can complete the ‘End of unit check’ and the ‘Power play’ page too.

Task 4: Complete the Roman numerals challenges.
There are two challenges to have a go at (please try and do at least one). The answers are provided! You can record your workings/answers in the squared maths book.

I have provided a Maths Support PowerPoint which can be used for extra support/practise if you feel your child needs it. If there are any problems please email me.

Literacy

Task 1: Spellings
Practise your weekly spellings and use the PowerPoint to help you. Can you make some flash cards that have the spelling word on one side and the definition on the other? There is also a word search.

Task 2: SPaG- Fronted Adverbials

Video to support activity: https://youtu.be/4yGzkyM_xEg

Watch the video and go through the PowerPoint which explains what a fronted adverbial is. I have provided you with a fronted adverbial word mat that you can use to help you. The video includes a few tasks to have a go at while you watch!

Complete the fronted adverbial activities sheet. The first activity asks you to add the missing commas to the sentences, and then have a go at writing your own sentences using the provided fronted adverbials. The second activity asks you to improve a text about rainforests by adding some fronted adverbials. Answers and a parent’s guide to terminology have been provided. Then have a go at the mini test to see how well you understand fronted adverbials!

Task 3: Reading Comprehension

Complete the reading comprehension activity on Treasure House.

Task 4: Creative Writing

Is there someone in your life who is your hero? Is there someone in your life who you really admire? It might be someone in your family who has done something amazing or it might be someone you know who has gotten through a really tough time in their life and they are an inspiration to you. It could be someone you know who has a really demanding job like a nurse, firefighter or a police officer. It could be someone that you are really proud of because they work really hard. Write about a person who has made a big impact on your life. Write about who they are and why you’ve chosen them to be your hero. You can include a picture or a drawing.

Other tasks

Science

I have filmed a half an hour video to support this task: https://youtu.be/4djzWs4ziAE

Go through the video and PowerPoint to explore different ways we can group animals. Learn about sorting animals into a Venn diagram and a Carroll diagram.

Task 1: Choose to sort the animal cards into a Venn diagram OR a Carroll diagram (if you want to try both then go for it!)

Task 2: Extension- can you sort the animals into 3 groups?

To save printing, you can write the animals onto the Venn diagram/Carroll diagram instead of printing the pictures.

Topic
Video to support lesson: https://youtu.be/kkaIEYugSEk

Last week you looked at the home front and how people at home helped contribute to the war effort. Go through the PowerPoint and watch the video all about propaganda posters. Explore all the examples of propaganda posters from the Second World War and think about what it is they are trying to encourage people to do? Which are your favourites?

Task: Design your own propaganda poster on A4 paper. Look at the PowerPoint for more information on this task. Please scan in/take a photo of your finished poster and email it to me- I can’t wait to see them! I have attached a picture of some finished examples from previous years.

VE Day- ‘Great British Bunting!’

On Friday 8th May 2020, Britain will be commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE day when the guns fell silent at the end of war in Europe. Due to the coronavirus restrictions, most VE Day events and street parties have had to be cancelled or postponed. As a school (and because this links in brilliantly with our topic!) we thought it would be great to still mark the occasion, share our pride in our country and honour the men and women of WW2. Please have a go at making your own special VE Day 75 ‘Great British Bunting’ to display in your window at home. You can use any material you have at home (paper, card, cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, string, ribbon, sweet wrappers, felt tips, paint etc). You can decorate your bunting with pictures of whatever inspires you, whether it’s those who fought on the frontline or worked hard on the Homefront, or whether it’s a celebration of enduring peace or your own personal hero. Hang your bunting with pride over the weekend of Friday 8th May- Sunday 10th May and make sure you take lots of pictures! Send the pictures to me via email and you can also share them on social media using the hashtags #GreatBritishBunting, #VEDay75 and #BBCMakeADifference. Follow the below link to find out more and to download instructions etc. Happy bunting making! https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/4TrqYDyf4PMdLypxzyTwGDg/great-british-bunting

Optional DT- Cooking (if you can get hold of ingredients!)

Challenge: design and make a ‘healthy’ pizza! How can you make your pizza ‘healthy’ (as healthy as possible) but also make sure it tastes amazing?! Can you write down your recipe? If your recipe is successful, I’d love you to email it to me so I can have a go at making it myself! Include a picture if you can!

Purple Mash

There will be some activities for you to complete on Purple Mash. Log in and go to ‘2Dos’ and complete the tasks that have been set. I will be able to see how you got on once you’ve finished.

Physical Activity
If you are enjoying them, continue with Joe Wicks’ PE lessons on his YouTube channel at 9am.

This week we are also going to focus on slowing down a little and relaxing our minds. Our mental health is just as important as our physical health, and it is important we take some time out each day to switch off our brain and relax. Have a go at this Cosmic Kids Peace Out Guided Meditation video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQCnWvwrO8U

Make sure you try and get outside for a little bit each day. Go on a morning walk or do some exercises in your garden. Fresh air is really important!
