Dear Parents,
This week, I will be in school on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Numeracy
With only really one week to go, I would, first of all, like to say a massive thank-you for all your support and hard work. This has been such a surreal and challenging time and I wanted you to know how much I appreciate all your patience and perseverance with my plans!
This week I would like the children to undertake some assessments. They will need help with reading and understanding what the question is asking, but where possible I would like them to try and answer independently (even if it is wrong). These tasks will identify areas which they may need additional boosters in, whether they just need practise to consolidate or whether they are secure. Rather than set tasks each day, I have attached a reasoning, arithmetic, 3 mental math activities and a summer activity booklet. You can pick and choose which ones you do but they should have out manipulatives to help solve. Please do not worry if they struggle. Our job as teachers is to get them where they need to be and, at St Katharine’s, we are experts!! All children will be assessed again in September and individual programs of study devised to best suit your child’s need. Our children are resilient and, without exception in this class, always enjoyed their work and learning. They will pick up very quickly where they left off and we will get them back up to speed (if needed!!).
Literacy
This week we will read a Knight and Dragon story and complete tasks linked to this. It is advisable to share the story each day. This familiarises the children and gives them confidence to join in or even read themselves. https://youtu.be/46rUbtp5UIo

Task One Share the video of me reading the story. https://youtu.be/46rUbtp5UIo Print out the story sequencing cards (task 1 sequencing). The children can stick them in order and either write a sentence to go with each image or write about the story. What did they like? Why? Which part was the best? |

Task Two Use the Task 2 description sheet. They can either describe the dragon or knight using fabulous sentences. |

Task Three Complete the Task 3 comprehension sheet (scroll to the end). There are different levels so choose which one you feel is more accessible for your child. |

Tasks Four Print out the Task 4 SPAG challenge cards and have a go at a few. |

Tasks Five Decide on their next adventure – Task 5. This is going to be a big write session so discuss what might happen. Recap on full-stops, capital letters and finger spaces. Talk about interesting adjectives and different ways of starting sentences ie where (behind the wall …..), how (with trembling hands ….), who (the gigantic, hairy ogre….), when (just before the sun rose ……), why (because he was terrified, …..). |
History
This week we are looking at Knights and Shields. Share the ppt video https://youtu.be/SvxWfdaDPBY . Your task is to design your own shield with a coat of arms. I am not providing a template as this will depend on the shape of shield you choose. Write why you have chosen your shape, colours and design and then try and make your own shield.
ICT – sort of!!
I would like the children to either upload a photo of themselves onto a powerpoint slide or word document or draw a self-portrait and write a little bit about themselves for their new teacher. I would like them to include one fun fact, something they are good at and what they are looking forward to in year 2. Depending on your child, you may wish to include something they are anxious about when starting in Year Two – it is always good to have a heads-up and helps their new teacher. Do not correct their spelling and encourage them to type / word process the sentences. In class, we will not use ICT but be doing this by hand so the choice is yours.
DT and Art
Make your own shield with the coat of arms you have designed. I am giving you creative licence as to how you make it and how big it is. No pressure!
Science
There is no science this week as the children have finished their unit on growing plants. Maybe just go for a walk and talk about all their learning, spotting examples and identifying plants of interest.
